“Having spent many months looking for a local gun dog training club, it was a relief to find one that was on the Wirral. The decision to start training with Gary, at MAP Working Gundogs, has been one of the most important in, my 21 month old dog, Ash's training. From the first session, 14 weeks ago, Ash has gone from a dog who would retrieve when he wanted to, wouldn't jump etc. to a dog that is now happily stopping on the stop whistle and responding to hand direction, retrieving blind and marked retrieves, from short and long distances, taking jumps without hesitation, working in cover etc. Whether it is the relaxed, friendly and positive atmosphere, the training facilities, pond, large and small fields, different types of cover, retrieving lane, pen and jumps, or the sheer hard work that Gary puts in, it has worked for me and my dog Ash. Gary is a very knowledgeable, keen and patient trainer, but you have to put the work in, and if your dog and you have potential, Gary will bring it out. I have to say, I think it's the whole package.”

“After deciding to get a dog for myself and 12 year old daughter Emily, I decided to look for a gundog trainer. I didn’t realise that buying a 6 month old springer spaniel would take some getting use to!! and train. After a while looking and asking various people on dog walks, I finally found Gary McCarthy and MAP Working Gundogs. Within 6 weeks our dog Jake was a changed dog, no more pulling on the lead, no more running in, he comes back now when he’s called! he retrieves from cover, water and his delivery is now excellent, before we came to Gary, Jake couldn’t do anything like a gundog was supposed to do, my daughter Emily and I now take Jake to game fairs all over the country and compete in all the scurries etc, even gaining a win for my daughter in a Skinners sponsored working test. I can thoroughly recommend taking your dog along to Gary whether it’s for gundog work for the serious shooting man or just to train a gundog breed and get that something else out of them, all the training is very relaxed and MAP Working Gundogs have all the equipment and practice areas for things you find at the game fairs”

"I started training with Map Working Gundogs just under twelve months ago. At the time I had a Labrador approaching three years of age which I knew had potential to do well in competitions. I had lots of picking up experience but no competition experience. I was immediately impressed with the facilities available, which include retrieving lanes, safe jumps, smaller enclosed areas and a pool. Everyone was welcoming in the group and Gary has been very encouraging with the training. Last year was my first year taking part in Gundog competitions and thanks to Map I have already achieved four awards out of seven working tests including a C.O.M. in a national final. I know I wouldn't have achieved this if I hadn't become involved with MAP. When I joined Map I was fortunate to have a good dog, but now I have a much better dog. I will be also taking my new pup along to enjoy the training and facilities."
Chris Morgan Since discovering Gary and Map Working Gundogs, I have been delighted and astounded, in equal measure, at the progress Teal, my retriever, has made. Because she could sit, stay and fetch I thought I had a good dog. How wrong I was! Retrieving is only the tip of the iceberg, as I soon discovered after attending a few lessons with Gary. Steadiness, response to the whistle and hand signals, keeping the dog hunting in the area, walk-ups, over fence retrieves, water retrieves, etc etc were all explained and taught to me in a calm and patient fashion by Gary. A mixture of one-to-one and group lessons ensured that Teal quickly achieved a high standard of competence which helped us to gain a place in the Skinners national novice finals. We have also completed our first season picking-up which, without the training and advice from Gary, would not have been nearly as enjoyable or successful. The training facilities in Heswall are first class and offer a wide variety of environments to ensure that, whether you are training for field or trial, you will achieve a level of proficiency which will greatly improve the pleasure and achievement felt by both yourself and your dog.
